I'm a little late jumping in on this thread, but here's my results so far. I'm on my THIRD dual Steinhausen winder right now in two months bought through eGadgets @ $199.
The first one; left side completely stopped working. The second winder; left side starting winding for about 4 5 minutes instead of the original and correct 33 seconds. THEN it got more interesting, the right side started winding one time and would not shut off even with the toggle switch in the OFF position!!!!! Permanent ON. That's a good one! They sent call tags via UPS for the other two.
The third winder they sent me has now operated flawlessly (so far) for about 2 weeks. We shall see. I'll tell you this though, eGadgets has been great about it all, great customer service. We'll see about the winder. I've been using the #3 setting for rotation in both directions and I calculate roughly 840 RPD that way.
Good for my Rolexes anyway. That's correct, the dollars are low.
Under $200 for a dual winder is dirt cheap so you shouldn't expect perfection. ONE THING THOUGH, no where in their advertising did they say, 'because these are so cheap please expect crap'. They should work properly, I can live with not perfectly silent, but the winding part of it better work right damn it! As far as which seettings to use? Get your calculator out and play.
I calculated that setting #3 (bi-directional) comes out to about 840 per day, but the Rolex neeeds 750. However, while the day progresses the watch is still functioning, unwinding, so I would think it doesn't OVERwind it at 840 per day. Setting #2 would (900 rpd?) probably work for your PAN (won't overwind, right?) and make sure the toggle is set to 'clockwise'. I think I may play around and build myself a watchwinder one of these days. Looks like I'm even later jumping on this thread than Tom. I've got 2 Steinhausen Quad winders and both are working well.
Out of the box, plugged them in, set the program and off they went and have been for 2 and 4 months respectively. On e-Bay they go for beteen $160 and 200, depending on when you see them. I also have an Underwood single winder I bought in London last year (it cost more than either Quad). It stopped working after about 1 month. Fortunately, I was returning to London just barely within the warranty period, so I took it back to Underwood's.
They have to send it to Italy for repair. Who knows when it will be back to me. I just purchased an Everwell EILUX Watch Winder 3-Place on eBay from av8or4.

It holds my wathes in place well (I have a large wrist and so my bracelets are sized large.) Runs smoothly. It's on my night table and is extremely quiet.
Here is the description from the ad (tried to omit the editorializing): Each one of the heads is individually adjustable for direction of rotation and the number of turns per day (860 and 1150). ROTATION: Each head can be set to rotate clockwise only, counterclockwise only, or bidirectional. Each individual head is powered by it's own motor. This winder will properly maintain all automatic watches 'WITHOUT OVER ROTATING WHICH CAUSES UNNECESSARY WEAR ON YOUR CHERISHED WATCH'. Before purchasing any other watch winder (especially those with one rotating cup that holds two watches) ask the merchant how their winder will go about winding two watches, if one only winds when rotated CCW and one only winds when rotated CW.
This winder operates with the included 110 volt AC adapter, not batteries. You will find this winder to be extremely quiet during operation and beautiful in appearance. Covered in Genuine Leather, it has a glass viewing window and locking clasp.
